SevenMaples - Preserving the Legacy

Andrew & Ray SevenMaples

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

When we moved in on May 31, 2021, seven majestic Sugar Maple Trees stood watch at the front of the farmhouse. Based on their diameter we estimated them to have been planted around the same time the house was built, circa 1860.

We considered several different names for the farm, but as we sat out front one summer evening early in June, the idea struck that these seven towering guardians of the property deserved to be specially honoured by naming the farm SevenMaples.

Time takes its toll on all living things, but this name, and the pictures we took, ensure that these splendid, seven original Sugar Maples will never be forgotten.

Since that time we have sadly lost 3 of the Sugar Maples, two due to illness in their trunks, which led to us having one cut down, while another blew over in a sudden powerful wind that appeared out of nowhere on an afternoon late in August 2022. The third one we had taken down out of an abundance of caution as it towered at well over 100 ft right beside the house and would certainly be a problem if it were ever to fall the wrong way. These days it seems like the storms and accompanying winds have intensified and it was a hard decision to make, but we believe it was the right one. A local outfit, Skratt’s Tree Services, has helped us with the removal of the trees. As you’ll see in the pictures, it takes a lot of equipment and people to deal with these massive trees.

Although pretty heart-breaking to lose these beautiful trees, on the bright side we have begun to plant new Sugar Maples in their stead and we’ll nurture these along as the newest family members of the SevenMaples legacy.
